Mixed Media Art Journaling Bible Tutorial: Best Way To Add Gesso To Your Pages, and Studying Esther

Esther is one of my favorite studies. I just love how God uses people in such unusual and amazing ways. It's just such a beautiful story and example of God's love and mercy! So, I'm doing the Good Morning Girls Blogging Through The Bible Reading Plan and reading one chapter a day and we're doing Esther first.

I've loved reading through Esther this week and having some fun art worshiping during the day. For this page, I decided to pull out some of my scrapbook supplies and just have fun! The first thing I did was prep my page with a thin layer of gesso.

SUPPLIES:

Note: I also have deli paper on hand and you'll see why tomorrow in my mixed media tutorial. You'll also see why I don't clean off my craft mat either. It's going to be a YUMMY tutorial!

1) pour out a little gesso onto your mat or palette

2) using your brayer spread the gesso around until you've coated your brayer with a thin layer of gesso

3) spread your brayer along the margins of your Bible. You don't want to go over the same spots very much and you want to stay as thin as possible to prevent ripping the delicate paper. Also, keeping it nice and thin barely gets the paper wet so it doesn't wrinkle as much. It also dries super fast, so you don't have to wait long to write over it.

Note: the little flecks of pink mixed in the gesso is from the leftover paint on my craft mat... I like it this way, but if you want it to be nice and clean white, you'll want to use a clean mat or palette)

Of course, you might as well do the other side too while you're leaving the Bible out to dry. This would be the back side of the first Esther page, you can see the tag sticks out and I love that. It makes it easy for me to find my reading for the morning.

Here are close ups of the Esther 1 page. I really wanted to emphasize the importance of love and respect in a marriage. I used pink paint and my favorite heart stencil for the background.

After that dried, I pulled out my pink scrapbook supply container and just started adding stickers and tags and fun embellishments. The flower sticker was gigantic so I just stuck a part down, cut off the rest, turned it around and stuck it down again in the corner, cut off the rest, and did the same again in the upper corner.

I found this "busted" die cut and thought it was just too perfect for the busted up marriage. I then finished it up with some mist splatters and stamping with shelf liner and bubble wrap. I had a fun time with this one!

ANOTHER NOTE: It would be wise to seal your page after you have filled it up. Gesso has a polymer in it and if you don't want the slim chance of your pages sticking together, you can spray it with an acrylic sealer. So far I haven't had any problems with pages sticking together in my art journals but just to be safe, I will probably seal my pages in my journaling Bible.
