Mixed Media Tutorial: Misting Experiment on Project Life Grid Cards

After yesterday's organization tip, I am really excited to bring you a series of tutorials using mists and spray inks. I really love using mists on my layouts and on Project Life cards.

I wanted to do a little experiment with them today. This experiment made me really fall in love with mists again and I'm so very excited to share this with you.

I have never misted over gesso before and only on top of plain paper. This is why I'm calling this an experiment rather than a tutorial. We're going to experiment with using mists on plain Project Life grid cards vs. Project Life grid cards that have been gesso'd. As you will see this gives you two totally different looks.

SUPPLIES:

  • Paper
  • Gesso
  • Mist/Spray Ink

For "paper" I used the Project Life grid cards - Amazon, Simon Says Stamp, 2Peas but you can use any kind of paper. It would be cool to see on old book paper too. I used three different colors of Heidi Swapp Color Shine - Amethyst, Tropicana Teal, Primrose; that matched my daughter's ballet costume. I plan on using it with photos from last weekend's ballet recital.

LET THE EXPERIMENT BEGIN

First, I grabbed four grid cards. I smeared gesso over two of them, using a palette knife.

Next, I started spraying them. I sprayed with the teal and amethyst lightly.

Then I sprayed them with lots of primrose.

I wanted to add more color, but to keep the colors from blending, I needed to dry them. I used a heat embossing tool to dry them. After it was dry I added more teal.

I took out my heat embossing tool again to dry it. I then looked at Moriah who was wearing her costume while working on her spelling workbook. I decided it needed more primrose again.

What a huge difference between the two. The gesso'd ones are so much more vibrant and such a cool texture. The plain cards soaked in the mist and aren't as vibrant.

I can definitely see a need for each. The plain card is much more subtle and would make a great background. The gesso'd one I have fallen madly in love with. I will definitely be doing this more often when I'm looking to do something a little bit more bold and artsy.

That was such a fun experiment! Have you ever done experiments with your scrapbook or art supplies? I'd love to hear about them.
