Valentine Stamping With Household Items - Mixed Media Tutorial

A few months ago, I shared how you can stamp with some common household items and it was a huge hit! I thought with Valentine's Day coming up soon it would be fun to show you some things you can do again but with a heart shaped theme!

First, we're going to use kitchen shelving mat. I think I shared with you that it's my fave texture to use for stamping and I figured why not cut a heart shape out of it to stamp!

NOTE: I used a tape runner to adhere it to the acrylic block... I will probably have my husband make me some wood blocks and adhere to that... or maybe get some cling foam and adhere it to that.

I can think of so many other shapes that would be fun to cut from the mat and stamp with... circles, triangles, diamonds, flowers, alphabets, etc...

I can also think of several other things you can cut into heart shapes that we used for stamping before... bubble wrap, textured foam, pencil eraser tips, etc...

Second, I wanted to show you how easy it is to make a heart shape stamp out of a toilet paper roll.

  • 1) flatten it in half

  • 2) you really don't need the whole tube and you can make several by cutting them into smaller pieces

  • 3) invert one of the folds inward to form the heart shape

  • 4) I added a few rolled up glue dots to the crease

  • 5) and stuck it together to help keep it's form better

VOILA! Now you have a heart shape to stamp with!

TIPS for stamping the toilet roll heart:

  • 1) use something with some "give" underneath your project, like a mousepad which I'm using here.

  • 2) I put my hand over the heart stamp to push down and get even pressure around the heart.

  • 3) something with thin lines like this is really tough to get a perfect image especially since the cardboard is absorbent. That doesn't bother me especially for mixed media projects.
  • I had much better results using paint though... and I bet that now that I have a coat of paint on the edge, I'll have a better imprint if I use the stamp ink again since it's not absorbent cardboard anymore.

A few other ideas for heart shaped stamping:

  • 1) use glue dots to adhere wood veneer hearts to a block for stamping

  • 2) do the same thing with chipboard hearts to get a completely different texture

ANOTHER TIP: if you're using the chipboard or wood veneer, you want to have something with "give" underneath since there isn't any "give" in the actual stamp like a normal stamp has. I like to use my mousepad for something like this. It seems to have the perfect amount of "give" to it.

Gosh, I can't tell you how good it feels to be back to writing mixed media tutorials for you guys! I've missed doing this! It brings me so much JOY to create and teach and I can't wait for another year full of new ideas and tutorials to share with you!
